The Davis Cup 2014 draw was released yesterday and as, expected, it has thrown up some mouth-watering clashes. First and foremost is the Serbia-Switzerland clash, which could be a block-buster provided Mr. Tennis – Roger Federer tries to play hercules again and try to give the Davis Cup title another serious run. More realistically though, Federer will pass it and possibly Novak too and Serbia ‘s 2nd string may prove tough even for epic man Stan Wawrinka. Serbia will have home court advantage and in sports, that counts for a lot!
Serbia will be awaiting the winner of the other 4th round match between Belgium and Kazhakhstan. This could be a great opportunity for a few of the players on either side -Xavier Malisse comes to mind and Olivier Rochus – he partnered Federer in the 1998 junior wimbledon final. They also have Steve Darcis – I am sure everyone know his claim to fame!
In other matches in the bottom half, Italy takes on Argentina, a match up which would be sensational in Football, the one that Europe and rest of world play]. However this would be sensational even in tennis, in a team format like Davis Cup. Argentina, is the greatest team to have not won a Davis Cup . Argentina should progress to the next round without much trouble.
The next Big 4 tie in DC 2014 involves Andy Murray leading his British mates to do something of an unfinished business from about 200 years go – conquer the US of A. The biggest obstacle for Team Britain will be the deadly twin duo that have dominated doubles for the last years. Bryan Brothers. Dominating doubles like Serena/Federer did on the singles side. I am leaning towards the Bryan Brothers and US on this one.
Bottom Half Picks : Serbia Vs Kazhakhstan, Argentina Vs USA.
The top half sees Nadal’s Spain go to Germany to add another victim to the relentless conquests of the Spanish Armada. Like with Federer, we are unlikely to see Nadal get to Germany. Germany, led by Kohlschreibber and Mayer should throw everything at Spain – all the more so since Germany has the home court advantage. If Nadal does not travel to Germany, this could be a tough ask for the clay-strong armada. Sensing the upset here, but will go with Spain in a tough battle.
The winner of this match will play the winner of France Vs Australia – another tennis contest that will have tennis fans jumping with joy. Australia have the unenviable task of taking on France in their own backyard. Tomic and Hewitt wil have to be ready to taken on a variety of super talented tennis players that include Tsonga, Gasquet, Monfils and Paire. It is tough to see Hewitt dig Australia out of this particular challenge. France should come through this one.
In the top-section of the draw, the top seeeds, Czech republic, have a relatively sedate start to the tourney against the Dutch. The Czechs, should they win, will face the winner of the Canada-Japan tie – which I am calling in favor Canada. If Raonic can do some more magic, Canada might have a shot at the Czechs, too.
Top Half picks: Czech Republic vs Canada and Spain vs France
It’s never too early to predict and I will predict the semi-finals as France vs Canada and Serbia vs Argentina. I will go with a Argentina – France with Juan Martin Del Potro and David Nalbandian bringing home the cup to Argentina for the very 1st time.
