Sunday saw some great performances by the players. It is now time to start the round of 32 action by the men in top draw on the day 6 of this tournament in the Californian dessert.Just summing up, Tomas Berdych and Jo Wilfried Tsonga were the major upsets on the day 5 and Juan Martin Del Potro withdrew due to his prolonged and bothering wrist injury.
Following are my predictions for day 6, round of 32 :
1. Roger Federer vs Dmitry Tursunov :
Federer defeated his round of 64 opponent in two sets and faced a little resistance in set 2 but he soared past his opponent. On the other end, Tursunov overcame his opponent in 2 sets as well after a tough set 1.
Federer leads 3-0 in their head to head meetings and all of them being on hard courts. The two have not met since the 2008 Beijing Olympics round of 64 and the first two meetings came in 2006 in Miami and Toronto respectively. Federer will have to make sure he does not have lapses like the one he had against Mathieu. Tursunov could make the Swiss Maestro pay for such lapses as Tursunov has some experience in putting big names away including Henman at Wimbledon and Andy Roddick in a Davis Cup match.
Prediction: The in-form Swiss legend to take it in two sets but might face a little resistance.
2. Rafael Nadal vs. Alexandr Dolgopolov :
Nadal and Dolgopolov recently played each other in the finals of the inaugural clay court event, Rio Open where Nadal outclassed the Ukrainian in two sets. He maintains a perfect 5-0 record against him in all their previous meetings. The Spaniard faced a tough battle in round of 64 and was almost knocked out but as usual he showed the true grit of a strong fighter and won the match in three sets. Dologopolov on the other hand won in two sets and will need to have a career defining match to knock the defending champion out.
Prediction: Nadal to win the encounter in a tough battle but straight sets.
3. Tommy Haas vs Kei Nishikori :
This is the first ever meeting between the German veteran and the Japanese young gun. Both of them easily soared past their previous round opponents and played sharp matches.
Prediction: This is difficult to call, but I think Nishikori will take it in a tough three set battle
4. Jiri Vesely vs Andy Murray:
Andy Murray is recovering from his back surgery and is desperate to perform better in each match he plays. He won the previous round in a fierce three set battle and drew the last blood. Jiri Vesely upset Pablo Andujar and won in three sets.
This is the first meeting between these men
Prediction: Murray to win in straight sets without any major difficulty.
5. Gael Monfils vs Fabio Fognini :
Monfils flew past the round of 64 and faced no problems as such.Fognini had to sweat it out in three sets. Both men equal their head to head meetings with 2-2 with Fognini having won their latest encounter in 2013 on clay court.
Prediction: Monfils to win in an entertaining 3 set battle.
6. Stanislas Wawrinka vs Andreas Seppi:
The eventual Australian open winner-Wawrinka had no problems winning the previous round and is anticipated to win more and carry on his match winning streak, being the only top 10 player to have not lost even a single match in any formats this year.Seppi toughed it out in 3 sets and made his mark in the round of 32.Wawrinka leads 7-3 in their head to head meetings and won their last meeting in a tough encounter.
Prediction: Wawrinka to win in straight sets, registering an easy victory
7. Milos Raonic vs Alejandaro Falla
Prediction: The big serving Raonic to win in straight sets
8. Kevin Anderson vs Evgeny Donskoy:
Prediction: Anderson to win in straight sets.
Day 6 surely promises to serve up a thrilling time at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden today.
