As we get into the pre-quarterfinal stage of the tournament in the Californian desert, we have some exciting matches lined up on the women’s side. Let us take a quick look at some of the good matches in store for us on Day 6 of the tournament.
1. Maria Sharapova vs [Q] Camila Giorgi
Sharapova was her usual self in her last match – double faulting all over the place, yet finding a way to overpower an inexperienced opponent. She will have to do better against the Italian qualifier who could make this match tricky, if she gets enough help from Maria. I expect Maria to clean up her act and see this match through.
Prediction: Maria in two tough sets
2. Ana Ivanovic vs Sloane Stephens
This is the night match for the day and rightly so. Two hard hitting players with a lot of talent could give us the best match of the tournament, should both of them turn up to play. They have both had their moments in the past and are trying to find their way to the elite group. Ana survived a scare in her previous round and should she continue the same way, Sloane has enough ammunition to take her out.
Prediction: Sloane Stephens to get a win over Ana Ivanovic in 2 tough sets.
3 Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Petra Kvitova
In this battle of grandslam champions, we can be assured of some real big hitting from both ends of the court. These two players rank as two of the most talented players I have seen in the last decade, but unfortunately both of them are far from their best form. It would be wonderful for the Tennis Galaxy should these two players put on their best. As things stand, I like Kvitova’s chances.
Prediction: Kvitova to win in 3 (hopefully not ugly) sets.
4 Flavia Panetta vs Sam Stosur
Another GS champion in action. Sam Stosur, the big hitting Aussie player with a big serve and an even big forehand will have to bring her very best to make it past Panetta who is definitely capable of some big hitting herself. This should be an entertaining and keenly fought match and I will go with Sam to win this.
Prediction: Sam to win in 3 sets.
